It is a machine which converts heat energy in to useful mechanical work. Heat engines develop more than 80% the energy generated in the world.

Heat engines can be broadly classified into two categories

(i) External combustion engine:
An engine in which combustion of fuel takes place outside the engine cylinder is called external combustion engine. These engines are generally called EC engines.
Ex: Steam engines, steam turbines, closed cycle gas turbine etc.
(ii) Internal combustion engine:
An engine in which combustion of fuel takes place inside the engine cylinder is called internal combustion engine. These engines are generally called IC engines.
Ex: Petrol engine, diesel engine, gas engine etc.

The following are the most important ways of classification of I.C. engines:

(i) According to the type of fuel used
(a) Petrol engines: In this type of engines, the fuel used is petrol.
(b) Diesel engines: In this type of engines, the fuel used is diesel.
(c) Gas engines: In this type of engines, the gaseous fuels like natural gas, biogas, are used.
(d) Bi-fuel engines: These engines use a mixture of two fuels.
(ii) According to the number of strokes per cycle
(a) 4-stroke engine: In this type of engines, the working cycle is completed in four different strokes.

(b) 2-stroke engine: In this type of engines, the working cycle is completed in two different strokes.
(iii) According to the method of ignition
(a) Spark ignition engine (S.I.Engine):In this type of engines, fuel is ignited by an electric spark generated by a spark plug.
(b) Compression ignition engine (C.I. Engine): In this type of engines, the fuel gets ignited as it comes in contact with the hot compressed air.
(iv) According to the cycle of combustion
(a) Otto cycle engine: In this type of engines, combustion of fuel takes place at constant volume
(b) Diesel cycle engine:In this type of engines, combustion of fuel takes place at constant pressure

(c) Duel combustion engine: In this type of engines, combustion of fuel first takes place at constant volume and then at constant pressure
(v) According to the number of cylinders

(a) Single cylinder engine:This type of engines consists of only one cylinder.
(b) Multi cylinder engine:This type of engines consists of 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 cylinders
(vi) According to the arrangement of cylinders

(a) Vertical engine:In this type of engines, the cylinder is arranged in a vertical position
(b) Horizontal engine:In this type of engines, cylinder is arranged in horizontal position.
(c) Inline engine:In this type of engines, cylinders are arranged in line
(d) Radial engine:In this type of engines, cylinders are arranged along the circumference of a circle. (e) V-engine: In this type of engines, combination of two inline engines equally set an angle.
(vii) According to the method of cooling
(a) Air cooled engine:In this type of engines, the heated cylinder walls are cooled by continuous flow of air
(b) Water cooled engine: In this type of engines, water is used for cooling the heated cylinder walls.

More Resources /articles
IC Engine Articles , Notes , Question and Answer
CAD Software | CAD Tutorials
Mechanical Subjectwise Basic Concept Notes ,Articles

Classification Of I.C. In 1946, special waterproof electrodes were developed in Holland by ËœVander Willingen'â„¢. In recent years the number of offshore structures including oil drilling rigs, pipelines, platforms are being installed significantly. Underwater welding is a type of welding which takes place underwater.

In underwater welding, the environment around the welder is wet. and uses welding equipment which has been customized for wet environment, commonly use under water techniques are hyperbaric enclosure welding, wet Underwater-welding, high pressure water jet welding,

other welding processes: friction welding, resistance welding, arc welding, tig welding, mig welding, oxyacetylene welding, electron beam welding, laser beam welding, and main risks for the welder performing Underwater-welding are the potential for electric shock, and the possibility of producing in the arc mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen in pockets, which might set up an explosion, and There are three main ways to perform Underwater-welding. One is to build an enclosure, a pit, around the place of repair and to pump away all the water: that amounts to prepare the conditions for normal welding in air, although the place may be deep under sea level. Another method of Underwater-welding consists in preparing an enclosure to be filled with gas (helium) under high pressure (hyperbaric) to push water back, and have the welder, fitted with breathing mask and other protective equipment, weld quite normally out of water but under pressure. The third is the wet Underwater-welding method, where no attempts are made to dry up the location of welding. Instead the power of the arc generates a bubble of a mixture of gases which lets metal melting and joining occur more orless normally, using specially covered electrodes to avoid that too much hydrogen be absorbed in the weld. The skilled welder must also be a diver, equipped for Underwater-welding, with all the extra equipment and protection a welder must use. There is also a less used method of Underwater-welding which features a special torch which sprays a cone of high pressure water, within which protective gas under pressure insulates the weld location from the water during welding.

Fig. Under water welding

CLASSIFICATION
Under water welding can be classified as :
i. Wet welding
ii. Dry welding
1) WET WELDING

Key technology for repairing marine structure
Welding is performed under water directly exposed to the wet environment
Increased freedom movement makes more effective, efficient and economical
Supply is connected to the welder/driver via cables or hoses
Complete insulation of the cables and hoses are essential in case to prevent the chance for electric shock
MMA (Manual Metal Arc) welding is commonly used process in the repair of offshore platforms.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

The work is connected to the positive side of dc source and electrode to the negative
The two parts of the circuit are brought together and then slightly separated
An electric current occurs in the gap and causes a sustained spark which melts the bare metal forming a weld pool The flux covering the electrode melts to provide a shielding gas.
Arc burns in the cavity formed inside the flux covering, which is designed to burn slower than the metal barrel to the electrode

Advantages

 The versatility and low cost.
 Less costlier than dry welding.
Speed with which it is carried out
No enclosures so no time is lost for building.

Disadvantages

Rapid quenching of the weld metal by the surrounding water.
Welders working under water are restricted in manipulating arc.
 Hydrogen embrittlement causes cracks.
Poor visibility due to water contaminance.

2) DRY WELDING

A chamber is created near the area to be welded and the welder does the job by staying inside the chamber.
It produces high quality weld joints .
The gas-tungsten arc welding process is used mostly for pipe works
Gas metal arc welding is the best process for this welding.

Scope of further developments

Hyper baric welding is well established and generally well researched.
Research being carried out for welding at a range of 500 to 1000m deep.
THOR-1 (Tig Hyperbaric Orbital Robot) is developed where diver performs pipe fitting, installs the tracks and orbital head on the pipe and rest process is automated.

APPLICATIONS

Offshore construction for tapping sea resources
Temporary repair work caused by collisions, unexpected accidents
Salvaging vessels sunk in the sea
 Repair and maintenance of ships
Construction of large ships beyond the capacity of existing docks

CONCLUSION
Alternatives which include clamped and grouted repairs (which may introduce unacceptably high loading on offshore structures) and the use of bolted flanges for the tie-ins are not necessarily and are not always satisfactory.

Download :
1) Underwater Welding.Pdf

2) Underwater welding.pptx

More Resources /articles
Latest seminar topic index - Report ,PPT Download
CAD Software | CAD Tutorials
Mechanical Subjectwise Basic Concept Notes ,Articles
Seminar On Underwater Welding -Report and ppt Download
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Seminar On Space Robotics -Report Free Download

Seminar On Space Robotics -Report Free Download

Seminar On Space Robotics -Report Free Download

Integrating the sensors and actuators built into the mechanical body, the motions are realised with the computer software to execute the desired task. Robots are more flexible in terms of ability to perform new tasks or to carry out complex sequence of motion than other categories of
automated manufacturing equipment. Today there is lot of interest in this field and a separate branch of technology ‘robotics’ has emerged. It is concerned with all problems of robot design, development and applications. The technology to substitute or subsidise the manned activities in space is called space robotics. Various applications of space robots are the inspection of a defective satellite, its repair, or the construction of a space station and supply goods to this station and its retrieval etc. With the over lap of knowledge of kinematics, dynamics and control and progress in fundamental technologies it is about to become possible to design and develop the advanced robotics systems. And this will throw open the doors to explore and experience the universe and bring countless changes for the better in the ways we live.

Fig. Free Flying Space Robots

STRUCTURE OF SPACE ROBOTS

DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE OF SPACE ROBOT

The proposed robot is of articulated type with 6 degrees of freedom (DOF). The reason for 6 DOF system rather than one with lesser number of DOF is that it is not possible to freeze all the information about possible operations of the payload/racks in 3D space to exclude some DOF of the robot. Hence, a versatile robot is preferred, as this will not impose any constraints on the design of the laboratory payload/racks and provide flexibility in the operation of the robot. A system with more than six DOF can be provided redundancies and can be used to overcome obstacles. However, the complexities in analysis and control for this configuration become multifold.

The robot consists of two arms i.e. an upper arm and a lower arm. The upper arm is fixed to the base and has rotational DOF about pitch and yaw axis. The lower arm is connected to the upper arm by a rotary joint about the pitch axis. These 3 DOF enable positioning of the end effector at any required point in the work space. A three-roll wrist mechanism at the end of the lower arm is used to orient the end effector about any axis. An end effector connected to the wrist performs the required functions of the hand. Motors through a drive circuit drive the joint of the arm and wrist. Angular encoders at each joint control the motion about each axis. The end effector is driven by a motor and a pressure sensor/strain gauges on the fingers are used to control the grasping force on the job.

DESCRIPTION OF SUBSYSTEMS

The main subsystems in the development of the manipulator arm are

Joints

Arm

Wrist

Gripper

JOINTS

A joint permits relative motion between two links of a robot.

Two types of joints are

Roll joint – rotational axis is identical with the axis of the fully extended arm.

Pitchjoint – rotational axis is perpendicular to the axis of the extended arm
and hence rotation angle is limited.

The main requirements for the joints are to have near zero backlash, high stiffness and low friction. In view of the limitations on the volume to be occupied by the arm within the workspace, the joints are to be highly compact and hence they are integrated to the arm structure. To ensure a high stiffness of the joint the actuator, reduction gear unit and angular encoders are integrated into the joint.
Each joint consists of

Pancake type DC torque motors (rare earth magnet type) which have advantage over other types of motors with respect to size, weight, response time and high torque to inertia ratio.

Harmonic gear drive used for torque amplification/speed reduction. These gear drives have near zero backlash, can obtain high gear ratios in one stage only and have high efficiency.

Electromagnetically actuated friction brakes, which prevent unintentional movements to the arms. This is specifically required when the gear drive is not self-locking. In space environment, where the gravity loads are absent (zero ‘g’ environment) brakes will help to improve the stability of the joint actuator control system. i.e. the brake can be applied as soon as the joint velocity is less than the threshold value.

Electro optical angular encoders at each axis to sense the position of the end of the arm. Space qualified lubricants like molybdenum disulphide (bonded film/sputtered), lead, gold etc. will be used for the gear drives and for the ball bearings.

ROBOT ARMS
The simplest arm is the pick and place type. These may be used to assemble parts or fit them into clamp or fixture. This is possible due to high accuracy attainable in robot arm. It is possible to hold the part securely after picking up
and in such a way that the position and the orientation remains accurately known with respect to the arm. Robot arms can manipulate objects having complicated shapes and fragile in nature.

WRIST
Robot arm comprises of grippers and wrist. Wrist is attached to the robot arm and has three DOF (pitch, yaw, and roll). Wrist possesses the ability to deform in response to the forces and the torques and return to equilibrium
position after the deflecting forces are removed.

GRIPPER

Gripper is attached to the wrist of the manipulator to accomplish the desired task. Its design depends on the shape and size of the part to be held.

CONCLUSION

In the future, robotics will make it possible for billions of people to have lives of leisure instead of the current preoccupation with material needs. There are hundreds of millions who are now fascinated by space but do not have the means to explore it. For them space robotics will throw open the door to explore and experience the universe.

Download : Seminar On Space Robotics -Report Free Download

More Resources /articles

Latest seminar topic index - Report ,PPT Download
Product Ideas , Innovative Machine Ideas Projects
Non traditional machining Projects

Seminar On Space Robotics -Report Free Download
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to BIS System Of Designation Of Steels

BIS System Of Designation Of Steels

BIS System Of Designation Of Steels

What does it mean? Engineering materials have various compositions, types, Applications, properties. Every material has its different mechanical properties, The Bureau of Indian Standards ( BIS ). have standardized the designation method for steel and other material. These standards are mainly followed by Indian industries, other countries may be using ASME standard.
A large number of varieties of steel are used for machine components.
Engineering materials and How they are Designated.
Steel :

It is an alloy of iron and carbon, with carbon content up to a maximum of 1.5%. The carbon occurs in the form of iron carbide, because of its ability to increase the hardness and strength of the steel. Other elements e.g. silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, and manganese are also present
to a greater or lesser amount to impart certain desired properties to it. Most of the steel produced nowadays is plain carbon steel or simply carbon steel.

Carbon steel is defined as a steel which has its properties mainly due to its carbon content and does not contain more than 0.5% of silicon and 1.5% of manganese.

The plain carbon steels varying from 0.06% carbon to 1.5% carbon are divided into the following types depending upon the carbon content.

1. Dead mild steel — up to 0.15% carbon
2. Low carbon or mild steel — 0.15% to 0.45% carbon
3. Medium carbon steel — 0.45% to 0.8% carbon
4. High carbon steel — 0.8% to 1.5% carbon
Designation Of Steels

Steels are designated by a group of letters or numbers indicating any one of the following three properties.
1. tensile strength;
2. carbon content; and
3. composition of alloying elements.

Steel, which are standardized based on their tensile strength without detailed chemical composition, are specified in two ways- a symbol Fe followed by the minimum tensile strength in N/mm2. Another method is FeE steel followed by the yield strength in N/mm2.

For examples:

Fe350 - This indicates a steel with a tensile strength of 250 newtons per mm square.
FeE 250- yield strength of 250 N/mm2.

Designation of Plain Carbon Steels:

This consist following three quantities:
1. figure and indicating 100 times the average percentage of carbon.
2. a letter C
3. a figure indicating 10 times the average percentage of manganese.

Example: 55C4 indicates a plain carbon steel with 0.55% carbon and 0.4 % manganese.

Designation of unalloyed free-cutting steels.

This consists following quantities.
1. a figure indicating 100 times the average percentage of carbon.
2. a letter C
3. a figure indicating 10 times the average percentage of manganese.
4. a symbol S, Se, Te, or Pb depending upon the element that is present and which makes the steel free cutting.
5. a figure indicating 100 times the average percentage of the above elements that makes the steel free cutting.

Example

25C12S14 indicates free cutting steel with 0.25 % carbon ,1.2 % manganese and 0.14 % sulphur.

Designation of high alloy steel

The designation of high alloy steels consist of following quantities
1. a letter 'X'
2. a figure indicating hundred times the average percentage of carbon
3. chemical symbol for allowing elements each followed by the figure for its average percentage content rounded off to the nearest integer.
4. chemical symbol to indicate especially at that added element to attain desired properties, if any.

Example:

X15Cr25Ni12 is a high alloy steel with your own 15 % carbon, 25 % chromium, and 12 % nickel.

Designation Of Cast Steels

Components from cast steel are manufactured by pouring the molten steel into the mold.
There are two varieties of steel castings
1. carbon steel castings and
2. high tensile steel castings.
Cast steels are designated according to the tensile strength.

Example:
CS640 is a steel casting with a minimum ultimate tensile strength of 640 N/mm2.

Designation of Alloy steels:

The designation of alloy steels consist of following quantities:
1. figure indicating hundred times the average percentage of carbon
2. chemical symbol for allowing elements always followed by the figure for its average percentage content multiplied by the factor. The multiplying factor depends upon the alloying element and its shown in the following figure.
In alloy steels, if manganese % is more than 1 then chemical symbols and their figures are arranged in descending order of their percentage content.

Example:

25Cr4Mo2 is an alloy steel having an average 0.25% of carbon, 1% chromium, and 0.2 % molybdenum.

Designation of Steel Castings and Forgings:
Five types of steel castings are designated as below by Bureau of Indian Standards:

(i) Unalloyed steel castings are designated by letter CS followed by minimum tensile strength in MPa (N/mm2).

(ii) Unalloyed special steel castings (high magnetic permeability) are designated by letters CSM followed by the minimum tensile strength in MPa (N/mm2).

(iii) Alloy steel castings are designated by letters CS followed by the minimum tensile strength in MPa and the chemical name and percentage of important alloying elements.

(iv) Heat resistant steel castings are designated by letters CSH followed by minimum tensile strength in MPa and chemical name and percentage of important alloying elements.

(v) Corrosion resistance steel castings are designated by letters CSC followed by the minimum tensile strength and chemical name and percentage of important alloying elements.
Some Examples asked in examination
1. Identify the Material and Composition:

a) X 10 Cr18Ni9Mo4Si2 :

Material: High alloy steel
Composition: Avg. 0.1% Carbon, 18% chromium,9% nickel, 4% Molebdenum,2% Silicon.

b) XT 72 W 18 Cr 4 V 1 :

Material: High-speed tool steel
Composition: average carbon content 0.72 %, tungsten 18 %, chromium 4 % and vanadium 1 %.

2. Give the composition of

(i) FeE220: Steel having a yield strength of 220 N/mm2.
(ii) 20C8 : Carbon steel containing 0.15 to 0.25 percent (0.2 percent on average) carbon and 0.60 to 0.90 percent (0.80 percent on average) manganese.

3.
